Why FR Workwear Comes in Different Fabric Weights?

Sep 30, 2026

When choosing flame resistant (FR) workwear, fabric weight is an important factor. Common FR fabrics range from around 4.5 oz to 12 oz, depending on the fiber composition and application.

Lightweight fabrics, around 4.5–6 oz, are suitable for hot climates and physically demanding work, offering better breathability and mobility.

Medium-weight fabrics, around 6.5–9 oz, provide a balance between comfort, durability, and protection for everyday industrial workwear.

Heavier fabrics, around 9–12 oz, can be suitable for colder environments or more demanding working conditions.

Fabric weight is not the only factor affecting comfort. Garment design also matters.

For hot environments, FR mesh panels can be added to suitable areas to improve ventilation and airflow.

For cold weather, insulation or padding can be added to provide extra warmth.

The right FR workwear is not simply about choosing a heavier fabric. It is about finding the right balance between fabric weight, protection, breathability, comfort, and working conditions.

At Eastman, we offer different FR fabric weights and garment construction options to meet the needs of different industries and working environments.
